As of the 1st October 2023, a monumental shift was set to reshape the landscape of England. The UK government has implemented a ban on certain single-use plastic items in an ongoing effort to curb plastic pollution and tackle the growing problem of litter.
The banned items, which include single-use plates, bowls, trays, cutlery, and polystyrene food and drink containers, are commonly used in the promotional merchandise sector. Due to the non-recyclable nature of these items, and the fact around 4.25 billion pieces of plastic cutlery are used every year in the UK, they are a significant contributor to environmental pollution.
The government's primary aim is to reduce plastic waste and protect the environment from pollution, aligning with its broader target of eliminating avoidable plastic waste by 2042. For the promotional merchandise industry, this ban is a call to action. Businesses across the country must now transition to reusable and eco-friendly systems for their promotional items.
