“This is okay for the tiger, the farmer, and our planet!”

What is Tiger Cotton?

Tiger cotton is fabric, designed to help maintain and restore tiger habitats. It follows the process of converting non-organic cotton fields to organic in Madhya Pradesh, India, to restore the bio-diversity and wildlife between two of India’s oldest nature reserves.

WWF India is working hard to restore the population of tigers. The nature reserves are famous for their untouched biodiversity. But in between the reserves are 14,000 small cotton farmers. They are the key to help the tigers.

“Sustainable agriculture plays an important role in conservation. It is an important piece of the puzzle. When farmers manage their land sustainably, they can help preserve critical habitats by improving soil and water quality. This, in turn, enhances their agricultural productivity in the long term. In this case, promoting organic cotton in areas where agriculture and biodiversity interact could create a win-win scenario for farmers and wildlife.” - Dr. Sejal Worah, Program Director, WWF India

Why Tigers?

The tiger rules at the top of the food chain. To live it needs a healthy population of smaller animals. This in turn, needs thriving wildlife. So as you can see, if you save the tiger, you save the whole eco-system.

The Bengal Tiger is protected in the nature reserves but it’s dangerous for it to cross to other areas. Tiger cotton seeks to secure the corridor between two of India’s biggest nature reserves. The tiger and the farmer shouldn’t be each other’s enemies. The farmer will let the tiger pass through his cotton fields if he knows all of the positive benefits the Tiger Cotton project brings the ecosystem on his fields. Okay, survival. Okay, tiger.

83 Kilos of Cotton

The average yearly output of a cotton farmer in the Tiger Cotton program is just 83 Kilos. Therefore, you can really see the small scale of each farm. 14,000 farmers live and work side by side with the tigers in Madhya Pradesh. 12,000 farmers of these farmers have been enrolled to convert their fields to organic.
