The Great Lunchbox Revival Has Begun

07/10/2021 11:34:27

With many of us returning to the office (and students going back to university campuses), the lunchbox revival has begun!

The origin of the lunchbox

The humble lunchbox is a staple addition to work bags, school bags and picnics to name just a few. But how, when and where did they originate?

Dating back to the mid 1800’s, the original lunchboxes were cleaned out tobacco tins or sturdy dinner pails. They usually featured food such as hard-boiled eggs, vegetables, meat and any other food that was readily available.*

This soon led to children wanting to copy their parents and the trend only grew from there, with commercial and branded lunchboxes soon to follow in the century to come.

In the 1960s-1980s, the metal lunchbox was abandoned in favour of vinyl-covered and plastic boxes that were cheaper to make. This allowed for easy printing of cartoon characters and many more. In fact, the Barbie line was one of the most successful. Then in the 1990s and 2000s, the soft insulated polyester lunch bag took over the market.**

  • The most expensive lunchbox in the world is the $229,000 Oscheriyori. The luxury lunchbox has three layers that are made from 18-karat gold and weighs 3.35 kilograms+
  • The average time people take to eat lunch is roughly 15 minutes (usually in front of a computer)+
  • In terms of the main contents for lunchboxes it’s a close call with 43% of people choosing to have sandwiches, 40% dinner leftovers and 17% have a nice healthy salad or other alternative++
  • The modern concept of a sandwich using slices of bread can arguably be traced to 18th-century Europe. However, the use of some kind of bread or bread-like substance to lie under some other food long predates the eighteenth century, and is found in numerous much older cultures worldwide#
  • It’s the Earl of Sandwich’s famous late-night snack from the 1750s that has come to dominate the modern lunchtime menu. John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich asked his servant to bring him meat stuffed between two slices of bread so that he would be less inconvenienced while out hunting or playing cards+
  • Bento Boxes - The boxes first appeared in Japan about 1,000 years ago, when they were used to carry rice. In modern times, they are considered an act of love (and a work of art) and there is even some competition among mothers to make the most beautiful and nutritious boxes.##

The future of the lunchbox

Lunchboxes come in all shapes and sizes and materials nowadays, but what does the future hold? How will they evolve? Will they continue in popularity?

As mentioned above, 40% of people have dinner leftovers in their lunchboxes, meaning that the demand is increasing for lunchboxes which keep food hot, can be put in the microwave, and are ‘leak proof’.

In addition, with the ongoing demand for more eco-friendly materials in our day to day lives, lunchboxes are now being made from more natural and more sustainable materials.

So why not do your bit for the environment, whilst giving your clients, staff or students somewhere safe to store their lunch at the same time?
