Show you care - a little thought goes a long way

Employee Appreciation Day, and also World Gratitude Day, are just two ways for companies to thank their staff for what has been an extremely testing couple of years for pretty much everyone. But appreciating or rewarding your employees can be done in so many ways, and they don’t all have to break the bank.

So what things can you do this year to thank your team and enhance employee wellbeing.

We’ve come up with top 10 tips of ideas from our Team to yours:

1. Mental Health & Wellbeing

Whether it is a complete wellbeing workplace programme or a simple duvet day, morning yoga, an extended lunchbreak or a pamper gift set, looking after the mental health and wellbeing of employees is so important, especially during the current pandemic. You could even set aside half hour each week for ‘Wellness Wednesday’ and encourage your team members to come up with ideas of what to do.

2. Staff Shoutouts to celebrate success

Here at Allwag we regularly give ‘Kudos’ on Microsoft Teams. Every time a colleague goes above and beyond, comes up with an exceptional idea, or creates a stunning visual, this goes onto a message board for all to see. This particular kind of appreciation costs nothing but goes a long way to making someone’s day. We post them on our ‘Chuffed Board’ in the office (when we are back in of course) and read them out at every team meeting!

3. The personal touch - thank you notes

In a similar vein to the staff shout outs, why not send a personal thank you notes to your team members. In a world where pretty much everything is digital, receiving something in the post (which isn’t a bill) is something to be treasured. You can send your hand-written note off directly to their home, and even include with it a little gift set as an extra little thank you.

4. Staff Awards

Do you regularly do employee of the month or staff recognition awards? There are often prizes or ‘shout outs’ for the sales team, but the other parts of the business can sometimes get forgotten. Staff recognition awards are a great way to ensure all departments get the acknowledgement and appreciation they deserve.

5. Breakfast - the most important meal of the day

Why not start the day with a Breakfast team meeting and compliment this idea with an extra surprise…a breakfast box, or a refresher tea/coffee pack, delivered direct to their door if they are working from home, or have ready on their desks if they are in the office. You can also add personalised notes inside the box to thank your team for all their hard work.

6. Afternoon tea anyone?

One bonus of hosting a ‘virtual’ afternoon tea is that it doesn’t matter if it starts to rain! Afternoon tea gift sets can be sent right to the doors of your team members, and are a great alternative to team lunches. You can all enjoy a cuppa, fruit cake, tea cake, a scone and biscuits at the same time. You can even add a mini bottle of prosecco!

7. Make them feel welcome

A recent survey showed that only 37% of employees received an onboarding box or new starter pack when they started their new jobs. Starting a new job can be daunting, but even more so whilst so many of us are doing our onboarding remotely. But it is not too late, and why not send all your team members something to show your appreciation.

8. Sweet Treats anytime

Now, chocolate always goes a long way, and can be added to every opportunity! 65% of Team Allwag said it’s the one food they couldn’t live without. Send sweets, treats, cakes or even doughnuts to your team direct to their door whilst they are still working from home. Or have a treats table in the office where they can grab sweets and chocolate when needed throughout the day!

9. Virtual Team Event

Escape rooms were all the range pre-lockdown, and are now seeing a resurgence with online and virtual versions. This is a great way to reward your employees, but also combine some great teambuilding at the same time. Split out your departments so everyone gets to spend time with people they don’t normally speak to.

10. End each week with a Happy Hour

Just because we are working from home, doesn’t mean we can’t finish the week with a happy hour on a Friday. Why not arrange a zoom call on the Friday late afternoon asking everyone to bring their own favourite beverage. Have fun – ask your team to share a ‘fun fact’ or about them to break the ice. This also allows departments who might not normally get to speak to each other the opportunity to gain a bit of insight into their colleagues. Equally, you could send out some snacks with a challenge in advance to your employees or team members to enjoy with their drinks.

Most importantly, recognising the hard work of your employees doesn’t just have to be limited to Employee Appreciation Day or 'World Gratitude Day'. You can do a series of these gestures of appreciation throughout the year or create your own online Employee Reward and recognition programme.
