Tackling Single-Use Plastic

10/01/2022 09:40:06

Back in 2018, the word of the year was ‘single-use’ and since the use of that word itself has skyrocketed!

This is largely down to David Attenborough’s programme ‘Blue Planet’, which highlighted the impact of plastic pollution on our planet, sparking global uproar towards plastic pollution++. In fact, in a 2021 survey, 92% of adults were concerned about plastic pollution in general*.

How much plastic is too much?

Well, every year the UK generates more than two million metric tons of plastic packaging waste*, and while the UK Government has a target to eliminate avoidable plastic waste by the end of 2042** (with this beginning with a plastic packaging tax in April of 2022*), the Centre for International Environmental Law predicts that plastic production will, in fact, grow by 60% by 2030 and treble by 2050+!

From protests to the discussions at COP26, it’s clear that the world has changed since 2018 when plastic waste reduction was catalysed, but how has the industry changed? What have we been doing to help reduce plastic waste?

Branded merchandise can sometimes get a bad reputation and can be seen as cheap, plastic and wasteful. That’s why here at Allwag we have been working harder than ever to join the global effort to reduce plastic consumption

How are we reducing plastic waste here at Allwag?

The Products...

We have introduced more products which are made from alternative products to regular plastic. We have a huge range of eco and sustainable alternatives, including bamboo, cork, wheat straw, recycled plastic, sustainable forestry, and even a revolutionary new polymer…rHIPS.b.

What is rHIPS.b?

rHIPS.b products are made from 100% waste materials, including things like yoghurt pots and even the inside of fridges!

Absolutely no virgin materials are used, and all the products are fully biodegradable. Unlike other plastics, they do not require extremely particular conditions to biodegrade. The rHIPS.b polymer naturally biodegrades in home compost, marine and landfill 200 times faster than standard plastic!

Reusable drinkware and straws

These are just two great options we offer our clients to help reduce the use of single-use plastic. After the UK ban on providing single-use plastic straws in 20201, there has been a call to boycott all single-use plastic products. We have therefore expanded our reusable drinkware and reusable straws range.

From bamboo (one of the fastest growing and most durable plants), to metal, wheat straw and even glass, we can provide reusable alternatives for all your drinkware needs.

Your brand can help fight the war against waste whilst maximising your environmental policy by using branded reusable coffee cups and promotional water bottles as part of your marketing activities.

Recycled PET (R-PET)

Turning bottles into bags (and toys, and lanyards, and mugs...) with our Recycled PET range.

Recycled PET is known as R-PET, and it is the most widely recycled plastic in the world. The use of R-PET by giving a new life to an already made product in place of virgin resin results in reduced environmental impact.

IMPACT Collection

Our impact range tells the story of genuine sustainability, with R-PET and recycled cotton products, as well as a unique water-saving dye process, with full traceability on every product.

The journey of the product and materials can be traced back using the unique tracking device, showing you where the materials have come from, as well as how much water you have saved by using the IMPACT product, over a non-water-saving product.

In the office...

Biodegradable Packaging

We have been focussing on an ongoing effort to improve the packaging we use for our deliveries, by reusing boxes when possible and utilising biodegradable packaging. To further support this choice, we are thrilled to see the plastic packaging tax that will be coming into play in April of this year. After lengthy consultations with various industries across the UK, the tax will be put in place to encourage the use of recycled packaging, rather than new plastic.

We hope that this will encourage all businesses to see the level of responsibility we have to reduce the amount of plastic waste we use, therefore reducing the amount of plastic going into landfills and making a positive impact on the environment.

Recycling our waste

A conscious change we have made that has made a difference to the amount of single-use plastic we produce is recycling our office waste. It may seem small, but encouraging all our staff to recycle any waste produced in the office has resulted in an increase in the number of reusable water bottles and coffee cups being used, as well as reducing the amount of waste we send to landfill.

How can you get involved in our battle against plastic waste?

We have a non-plastic alternative to almost every product that you know and love!

So, you can reap all the benefits of promoting your branded with quirky or traditional branded merchandise and clothing without the guilt of contributing to plastic landfill waste.

Many of our newer ranges are designed with increased longevity in mind, such as our reusable coffee cups and water bottles. With these, you can help save the planet, maximise your brand exposure and also help towards your sustainability goals!
